Senior Gems® and Alzheimer's Foundation of America Programs Available for the Community
Most likely you know someone who has, or is helping someone with Alzheimer's Disease or some other type of dementia such as Parkinson's, Lewy Body or Vascular Dementia. Bob Tucker, a qualified dementia care provider (QDCP) and co-owner of Senior Helpers in Northbrook has given more than 70 presentations on this topic at community centers, hospitals, nursing homes, churches, temples and support groups. In addition, Bob has been on several radio and TV stations discussing Alzheimer's and dementia issues.
"My goal is to support and provide current information to family members and professional care providers struggling with these illnesses. As the primary family caregiver for my dad who suffered from Alzheimer's Disease, I truly understand what emotional pain the family is facing," he said. "This is why I am happy to help other families on the various care options and community resources available to them."
One of the programs available to the community is the Senior Gems Alzheimer's/Dementia Maximizing Life Program. The audience will learn about what is normal aging vs. aging with dementia, and the psychological and physiological changes that occur. Tucker will use a consumer-friendly version of the Allen cognitive scale to help determine a person's state of dementia. In addition, he will discuss the management of difficult behaviors, techniques to communicate more effectively with affected individuals, things to avoid saying and doing as well as how to maximize their health with restorative activities.
"The Northbrook Senior Helpers' office is the Alzheimer's Foundation of America Cares affiliate office for the entire Chicago-area," said Abbie Tucker, senior advocate and client services director, certified senior advisor (CSA) and a qualified dementia care provider (QDCP). "As a result, Senior Helpers has established an Alzheimer's/Dementia Care Resource Center for the community in our office. All of the materials-books, DVDs, articles and magazines about dementia-are available to anyone in the community for no charge, as is a free consultation and access to all of the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA) programs."
