From sticks to scarecrows; contest winners announced

A bit of chaos was the norm at the Long Grove Park District's annual scarecrow creation event Oct. 10 at the Reed-Turner Nature Center. More than 75 people, from toddlers to grandparents, designed and crafted scarecrows.

Starting with skeletons and heads provided by the park district, the families stuffed, drew, glued, pinned and stapled until their creation took life in front of them.

The families then took their creations home to brighten up their Halloween season decor.

Winners and their creations are:

• Kangail family of Vernon Hills, "Colorful Fall Fashion"

• Costabile family of Long Grove, "Lady in Blue"

• Kassulat family of Long Grove, "Hockey Anyone?"

• Leopoldi-Nichols family of Long Grove, "Mustache to Remember"

• Kadens family of Long Grove, "The Black Hat"

• Mower family of Long Grove, "Remembering Grandpa"

Photos of all of the winners are posted on the Long Grove Park District website at lgparks.org.

Special thanks to Whole Foods of Kildeer, which provided refreshments as well as the prize winners' gift bags.
