How to find a dentist you'll love
Choosing a good dentist in the Chicago area is similar to finding a marriage partner. After all, it's not just a one-time encounter; the dentist/patient relationship should be a long and amiable one.
Some people need to find a new dentist because they are new to the Chicago area or some may need a dentist who can perform cosmetic dentistry. For whatever reason, what is important is that there are certain steps that a person should take before choosing a new dentist.
Asking family and friends or medical doctors for references is a great first step. If a friend had a good teeth whitening, ask them. If this is a cross-country move, asking a person's current dentist for a recommendation or checking with the local or state's professional dental organizations is the way to go.
After you have chosen some candidates, it is time to do some research. Asking the right questions will determine if this is the right fit.
• What are the office hours?
• Are there emergency services available?
• Where did the staff train and what are their specialties?
• Is it necessary to go outside for special services like crowns and bridges or dental implant work?
Dr. Bryan Jacobs of the Dental Professionals of Chicago says one should ask:
• "Does the practice use the newest, most innovative techniques available?
• Does the dentist practice preventive practices?
• And most importantly, is the practice patient centric?"
Financial questions should include:
• What dental insurance plans does the practice accept?
• Will the dentist provide a full treatment plan including prices before work is started?
"Next, visit the dental office. Is the waiting room comfortable and inviting? Are the dental facilities clean and orderly? Is the staff professional? Are they willing to answer questions? Are appointments easy to make or is there a long backlog? All of these things are really important," says Jacobs.
During the first visit, ask the dentist about his or her approach to treatment and preventive dentistry. Is everything explained clearly and are your questions and concerns answered? Are you comfortable with the dentist?
This first visit is akin to a courtship. This is the time to decide if this is a professional relationship that will last.
