New Mt. Prospect manager could get $205,250 compensation package

Mount Prospect isn't naming its next village manager yet, but the village is making public how much it's willing to pay that person.

The village board on Tuesday will vote on a $205,250 compensation package for the next village manager, whose identity could be revealed shortly thereafter if the package is approved.

Mayor Arlene Juracek said the candidate is someone with extensive experience as a village manager.

"We want someone who is going to be a good judge of management and leadership and a good developer of managers and leaders," she said. "We have got somebody who we think can sustain a team and create an even stronger team."

The village parted company in April with former manager Michael Janonis, who served in that role for more than 20 years. Janonis took a leave of absence in December under the Family and Medical Leave Act, then struck a separation agreement paying him more than $200,000.

Assistant Village Manager David Strahl has served as acting village manager since Janonis took leave.

The person chosen as Janonis' replacement was one of 33 candidates village trustees considered. Six were interviewed in person.

Under the proposed compensation package, the starting salary for the new village manager will be $195,000. The manager would receive 23 vacation days, 12 sick days and five personal days, as well as a vehicle allowance of $6,000. The package also would include $9,750 in deferred compensation and $21,930 in employer-paid health insurance.

"We think our guy is the total package," Juracek said. "Obviously, you're not shopping for the cheapest deal. You're shopping for the best deal, the best value in management. And we think that's what we're bringing to the village."
