Prospect outlasts Buffalo Grove
Prospect rookie girls volleyball varsity coach Laura Gerber earned her first win in the Mid-Suburban East on Thursday night when the Knights topped visiting Buffalo Grove 25-17, 170-25, 25-17 at the Jean Walker Field House in Mt. Prospect.
Nikki Giammarino had 20 digs and Michelle Haaning collected 20 assists for Prospect which improved to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the East.
Top attackers for the Knights were Maggie Porwit (8 kills, 3 blocks), Mary Mazurek (7 kills), Kaela Myers (5 kills, 2 aces), Brenda Kendziera (5 kills, 1 block) and Sammy Withey (2), who also had 2 blocks and 3 aces against the Bison (2-7, 0-1).
The Bison (2-7, 0-1) were led on attack by Dana Stutzman (10 kills), Nadia Tarasova (5) and Kanella Kalyviaris (3). Anna Fasuna had 21 assists.
Wheeling d. Elk Grove: Timber Terrell (11 kills, 4 blocks, 10 digs), Michaela Vasey (14 digs, 2 kills), Remy Jankowski (12 digs, 6 aces, 1 kill), Annalisa Baranowski (6 assist, 1 assist, 1 kill) and Jessica Janowski (15 assists, 9 digs, 1 assist) helped lead the host Wildcats (3-11, 1-0) to a 25-19, 23-25, 25-15 victory in the MSL East opener.
Elk Grove was led on attack by Rachel Kandefer (8 kills), Mackenzie Vetter (5) Carly Crothers (4). Alex Masnica had 13 digs and 10 assists for the Grens (1-8, 0-1) while Jenny Banak had 12 digs.
