Elgin man, 35, charged with attempted child abduction
A 35-year-old Elgin man was charged with attempted kidnapping over the weekend, according to police and court records.
Douglas A. Martinez, of the 1600 block of Mulberry Court, is accused of grabbing an 11-year-old girl Sunday on the 300 block of South McLean Boulevard on the city's west side and trying to drag her behind a Dumpster before three of her friends intervened to help the girl get away.
They all ran off and called family members, who went to the area and detained Martinez until police arrived, authorities said.
Police said the girl - as well as her friends, ages 11, 12 and 17 - were not injured.
Martinez also is charged with child abduction, child luring and unlawful restraint, all felonies, according to Kane County court records.
Martinez' bail amount was not immediately available Tuesday. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted of the most severe charge of aggravated attempted child abduction.
Elgin Deputy Police Chief Bill Wolf could not immediately be reached for additional comment.
Martinez is next due in Kane County court Sept. 18.
