Be aware of dangers from rail tankers
I thank you so much for your Wednesday, Aug. 26, Opinion column. I have been writing for years about the Canadian National Railway, which goes through many suburban towns in the North West of Chicago.
I realize the danger and want people to take an interest in the danger we are exposed to with exploding tankers. I see no advantage in the proposed underpass on Route 14 in Barrington. It is supposed to solve the traffic problems, but does nothing for the three other crossings in the Village of Barrington.
I believe the people in charge have to insist on every safety measure that is available. The railways seem inured to any public safety, and I am frightened for the residents of Jewel Park and Shorely Woods and also drivers who use this very busy route through Barrington.
I remember going to the meeting when CN bought the EJE railway and the arrogance with which my very pertinent questions were treated by the representatives of CN.
They knew they did not have to be concerned as the decision had already been made. Hours of questions and protests from the public made no difference and our then-congresswoman, Melissa Bean, made a very good speech opposing the railway route.
No notice was taken, and I can understand how people lose trust in officials and indeed in the whole political sphere.
