Schaumburg Boomers drop 7-5 loss to Gateway

The Schaumburg Boomers suffered a 7-5 loss to the Gateway Grizzlies in the middle game of a series before 4,327 fans on the final home Saturday night of the season.

Gateway was able to win the back-and-forth contest by tallying a pair of 2-out runs in the top of the ninth. The visitors opened a 2-0 advantage in the first, but the Boomers were able to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. Willi Martin notched an RBI single and TJ Bennett coaxed a bases-loaded walk. Kyle Ruchim put the Boomers ahead at 4-3 with a 2-out RBI single in the sixth. Gateway countered with two in the seventh to lead before an infield hit from Cam Sherrer again tied the game.

Evan Boyd worked 4 innings in another spot start, striking out four. Schaumburg tallied 10 strikeouts in the game with every pitcher collecting at least one. The Boomers posted 11 hits. Ryan Brockett, Ruchim, and Martin each finished with a pair. Bennett finished with 2 RBI while Sherrer swiped a pair of bases.

The Boomers (36-53) finish the series with Gateway on Sunday afternoon.
