Elgin man gets 5 years in 2014 marijuana bust
An Elgin man has been sentenced to five years in prison after authorities raided his home last year and seized 15 pounds of marijuana.
Victor H. Galvan, of the 200 block of North Weston Avenue, recently pleaded guilty to possession of more than 5,000 grams of cannabis, a felony punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
Kane County Judge James Hallock accepted the plea in which prosecutors dropped the most severe charges, which carried a prison term of six to 30 years.
Galvan also must pay $36,460 in fees and fines, including a $35,000 drug fine, according to court records.
Members of the North Central Narcotics Task Force, which is a unit of the Illinois State Police, searched Galvan's home in October 2014 and seized 15 pounds of marijuana.
Galvan was not home at the time, but showed up during the search and was arrested.
His most serious offense in Kane County prior to that arrest was for felony criminal damage to property in January 2012 in Elgin, records show.
That charge was later reduced to a misdemeanor for which he pleaded guilty to and received 18 months probation and a $1,700 fine.
A message left with Galvan's defense attorney, Vince Solano, was not immediately returned.
Galvan gets credit for about 10 months served at the Kane County jail while his case was pending.
