State police: 15 pounds of marijuana seized from Elgin man's home

A 22-year-old Elgin man faces felony charges after authorities seized from his home 15 pounds of marijuana worth an estimated $50,000, state police said.

Victor H. Galvan, of the 200 block of North Weston Avenue, faces felony charges of possession of and manufacture/delivery of more than 5,000 grams of marijuana, according to Kane County court records.

If convicted, he faces between six and 30 years in prison without the possibility of probation.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Bill Backus, director of the North Central Narcotics Task Force, said authorities executed the search about 4:30 a.m. Friday.

"He was not home at the time but did show up at the house prior to our departure and was taken into custody," Backus said. "We seized 15 pounds of cannabis. We're alleging he was involved in the distribution of cannabis in the Elgin area."

Backus said state police also seized packaging material from the home.

Galvan had been under investigation for a month after authorities received a tip and began conducting surveillance, Backus said.

Galvan is being held at the Kane County jail on $325,750 bail, meaning he must post $32,575 to be released while the case is pending.

According to court records, Galvan was charged in January 2012, with felony criminal property damage of more than $300. He later pleaded guilty to a reduced misdemeanor charge and was sentenced to 18 months probation and fined $1,700, records show.

Galvan is next due in court on Oct. 24.
