Illinois Fencers Club Earns Medals at IFC Youth and Veteran Fencing Tournament and Competes at the USA Fencing National Championships & July Challenge
On May 31st 2015, Illinois Fencers Club (IFC) hosted the 2015 IFC Youth and Veteran Fencing Tournament at Lions Recreation Center, 411 S. Maple St., Mount Prospect, IL. Seventy young fencers, boys and girls, age 8 to 14 as well as several veterans competed in all three weapons: epee, foil and saber. Illinois Fencers Club members came away with multiple medals.
The Y12 mixed foil saw IFC's Owen O'Brien and Parker Wakwicz finish with silver and bronze respectively. In Y14 mixed epee, IFC fencers swept gold silver and bronze with David Fang capturing the gold, Peter Kulaga taking silver, while Geeta Jhangiani and Saif Syed tied for third. Peter Kulaga also took gold in Y14 mixed foil, while Owen O'Brien and Parker Wokwicz tied for bronze.
In the veterans combined mixed epee category, John Lartz and Tim Glass took gold and silver respectively with Dave Swanson tied for bronze.
At the Summer Nationals in San Jose, CA June 27 to July 6, 2015, the IFC Men's Epee team, Maciek Zmyslowski, Gabe Weininger, Zimo Zhu and Evan Stauber, placed 12th in the biggest team event. Fifty-one top teams from around the nation and the world made this a highly competitive and challenging event.
Also at the Summer Nationals, IFC member Tim Glass made it to the final round in Veteran 60 men's epee. Tim competed in a field of 48 veteran fencers and came away with a second place finish and the silver medal.
Other Illinois Fencers Club members competing included Evan Stauber who finished 11th in a field of 163 fencers in Division II Men's Epee and Anna Paul who placed 12th in Division I Women's Epee in a tough field of 78 of the best female epee fencers in the US, Anna also finished 14th in Division IA Women's Epee, where she had to meet former teammate Christine Dominick in the pools.
The Illinois Fencers Club promotes and teaches the Olympic sport of fencing to students of all ages and skill levels and provides a friendly venue for members to practice their sport. It is a member operated non-for-profit sports association that has been serving beginning, recreational, and competitive fencers for more than 40 years.
IFC offers affordable classes with high quality instruction for kids, youth, and adults in several skill levels and offers three clinics for advanced competitive fencers each year. The youth program provides athlete centered fencing instruction that teaches self-discipline and sportsmanship and fosters athletic, academic, and personal success.
While fencing is typically one a costly sports, IFC is committed to providing access to our favorite sport for reasonable fees. The current membership fee is only $225 per year, providing the opportunity to fence 7 to 8 hours per week, 12 months a year.
Illinois Fencers Club is open to visitors Monday or Thursday evenings in the lower level of the Lions Recreation Center at 411 S. Maple Street, Mount Prospect, Illinois, just three blocks from the METRA station.
