At last, some good news to discuss
I live in an assisted living facility. Each morning at 9:30 a.m. someone reads the current Daily Herald out loud and we discuss its contents. This morning at breakfast we were lamenting how the newspapers are full of so much bad news that's it's becoming harder and harder to find something upbeat to discuss.
Then, on the front page, you told how the DuPage County Fair will open on schedule due to the long hours and hard work of Jim McGuire's four staff members and many volunteers.
In Section 4 you had an article on the Special Olympics World Summer Games taking place in Los Angeles this week. I am thrilled that Ryne Stolarz will be participating. My grandson has known Ryne for many years and taken part in sports programs with him. Again, many volunteers (as well as staff) make these things happen. Without volunteers, these programs would be diminished, and they are so important.
Volunteers are the backbone of so many wonderful programs. I put in many hours until I was no longer able to do so. I hope some younger people who find life boring will consider becoming part of the volunteer workforce. There is a lot of satisfaction in it. And I hope you will continue to report on the good things happening in the world. We all need that "lift" with our morning coffee.
