Take special care of pets in hot weather
The Daily Herald recently ran a photo titled, "Time to Celebrate." The photo depicted several dogs attending an outdoor grooming and microchipping event on the hottest day of the year in Huntley. Most readers wouldn't think twice after seeing this photo. But the image saddened and angered me and prompted me to share my story.
This is an urgent reminder and a plea to all dog owners to keep pets indoors as the temperatures rise. Many breeds of dogs cannot tolerate extreme heat, even if they are drinking water or sitting in the shade. Some breeds, like my pug, have very limited breathing capacity and should not exert themselves in heat and humidity.
It is not cute or entertaining to bring your dog to a street fest or outdoor event. The dog looks miserable, and the owner is usually oblivious. Never leave your pet unattended in a vehicle, because the interior can quickly become like an oven and reach temperatures of more than 110 degrees on a summer day.
I am not an expert, but I speak from experience. I lost my beloved Boston terrier on a hot July day in 2008. He had an underlying heart defect, but no doubt the heat contributed to his death. No one should have to experience the devastating sudden loss of a pet.
I miss him every day.
