Child hurt when car crashes into Beach Park day care
One child was injured Wednesday when a car driven by a 16-year-old girl - who did not have a driver's license or a learner's permit - crashed through the front wall of a Beach Park day care.
Lake County authorities said the 9:15 a.m. crash took place at the Lee's Family Daycare and Learning Center in the 38800 block of Sheridan Road.
Officials said the driver was turning into the driveway of the day care when she stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake. The vehicle lurched forward, officials said, and crashed halfway through a brick wall of the building and into a room where several children were eating breakfast.
The teen did not have a driver's license or a learner's permit, officials said.
Her aunt, Ranie Hall, 33, of Kenosha, Wisconsin, allowed the girl to drive the vehicle, officials said. Hall was in the vehicle at the time, police said, but they did not know why the juvenile was driving or why the pair were at that location.
The injured 11-year-old child was taken to Vista Hospital in Waukegan at the request of the parents, officials said. None of the other 21 children and eight adults in the day care center were injured in the crash.
Parents of the children at the day care center were notified and responded to the scene. A call to the day care center for comment went to voice mail.
The juvenile driver was cited by police with operating a motor vehicle without a license and operating a vehicle without insurance. Hall was cited for allowing an unlicensed driver to operate a motor vehicle.
Both are scheduled to appear in Round Lake Beach traffic court Sept. 14.
