Man convicted of battering Batavia baby

A former Batavia man was found guilty Wednesday of severely injuring a baby in April 2011.

Nicholas E. Glucksmann, 52, was convicted of aggravated battery, a Class X felony, by Kane County Circuit Judge John Barsanti, according to a news release from the state's attorney's office.

Glucksmann, who now lives in Wheaton, was also convicted of lesser felonies of aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery to a child.

Barsanti heard the case in April.

Glucksmann and his girlfriend lived on the 300 block of South Batavia Avenue when the injuries occurred. On April 16, 2011, they took the 3-month-old boy to a hospital with head injuries.

The boy was then sent to a Level 1 trauma center. Emergency-room doctors suspected child abuse and called police. Glucksmann told police the boy had fallen off a bed, but doctors determined that a 2½-foot fall would not have caused the boy's brain trauma and bleeding from his eyes, according to the news release.

Glucksmann faces a minimum of 6 years in prison. He remains free on $5,000 bond. He is next due in court at 1 p.m. Aug. 27.

He has to register on the Violent Offender Against Youth list.

The child continues to recover from the injuries and is expected to live a normal life, according to the release.

“Child abuse is a horrific crime. Annually, nearly 700,000 children are injured or killed as a result of child abuse. Whatever motivated Mr. Glucksmann to injure this infant is inexcusable. I'm grateful to the medical community and our prosecution team of Lori Schmidt and Nydia Molina, who stood up for this child and held Mr. Glucksmann accountable for his violent behavior,” State's Attorney Joe McMahon said in a prepared statement.
