Slammers walk past Boomers

The two-time defending Frontier League Champion Schaumburg Boomers returned home to open a three-game series with the Joliet Slammers and dropped an 11-6 decision on a Day Camp Day.

Joliet chased Schaumburg starter Anthony Gomez from the game in the second after scoring four runs. The Slammers did not trail the rest of the way. Schaumburg fell behind 7-1, but battled within 7-5 with four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Mike Schulze notched an RBI single in the frame to extend his hitting streak to 16 games, second longest in team history and tied for the longest in the league this year. Sam Lind added a two-run single. Trailing 8-6, the Boomers left the bases loaded in the fifth and Joliet scored two in the seventh and one in the eighth to pull away.

The Boomers used five hurlers in the contest. Zach Wendorf worked three innings and did not allow an earned run. Schaumburg issued a season-high nine walks in the game. The Boomers finished with nine hits. Jordan Dean, who became the team's career leader in steals with a stolen base in the sixth, Craig Massey, and Schulze each logged two hits.

Schaumburg (15-19) continues the series with Joliet Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m.
