Disassembly part of the Camp Invention fun

Children took apart computers, stereos, clock radios and other old electronics Tuesday, with plans to use the parts to create a video game during Camp Invention in Island Lake.

The weeklong camp at Matthews Middle School focuses on creativity, innovation, real-world problem solving and the spirit of invention.

"It's all about cooperating in a team, coming up with great ideas and then filter it down and making it work," said Julie Lochen, who has been the director of Camp Invention in Island Lake since it started eight years ago.

Camp Invention encourages children in grades 1-6 to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics curriculum in a fun and creative atmosphere, including outdoor activities.

Since 1990, Camp Invention's programs have served more than 1 million children and 125,000 teachers and leadership interns nation wide, according to a report.
