Fire Safety Variety Show a success

The Countryside Fire District sponsored a Fire Safety Variety Show in partnership with the Vernon Hills Park District. The show wrapped up the school year at the Sullivan Center Auditorium and was a grand finale for qualifying eighth-grade students from Hawthorn Middle North and Middle South schools and Woodlawn Middle School.

Prior to the grand finale, these teams provided a fire safety performance at an assembly in their school to all sixth- and seventh-grade students.

Fire and Life Safety Education Coordinator Tony Rodkey stated, "This is (a) peer to peer method of teaching fire prevention in the schools. Many times younger classmates listen to their older peers."

Buffalo Wild Wings and Cold Stone Creamery provided refreshments and appetizers for the event. Blaze the Buffalo was on-site to inspire the students.

The team with the highest score earned a Buffalo Wild Wing party and $500 in American Express checks. The judges were from the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance, Northern Illinois Fire Inspector's Association and the St. Joseph School National Honor Society.

The first- and second-place teams were from Woodlawn Middle School and third place went to Hawthorn Middle North.
