Fishing derby for kids on June 14

Anglers 15 and younger are invited to drop a line at the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County's 29th annual "Just for Kids Fishing Derby."

The derby runs 8 a.m. to noon Sunday, June 14, at Silver Lake at Blackwell Forest Preserve near Warrenville. The main entrance to Blackwell is on the north side of Butterfield Road, a quarter-mile west of Winfield Road and 1 mile east of Route 59.

Kids can learn about fishing and advance their skills during this free family-friendly event. Prizes will be awarded to winners in four age groups for the largest fish in three species categories - bass, bluegill and miscellaneous - as well as to winners of the casting contest.

Kids should bring their own gear; bait will be provided while supplies last. The derby will take place rain or shine, and participants should register at the forest preserve the morning of the event.

"This is a fantastic opportunity to get kids outdoors and interested in fishing," said Joe Cantore, president of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County President.

For information on the derby, call Visitor Services weekdays at (630) 933-7248.
