Fest brings Indian music to Glendale Heights
The fifth annual Eye on India Festival this month will feature an evening of classical Indian music Sunday, June 7.
The Eye on India Festival runs through Sunday, June 28. From cinema, visual art and music to fashion, dance and yoga, Eye on India showcases contemporary and traditional Indian art in a variety of locations across the Chicago area. More than 12 events are planned, and each is copresented by arts, business, and community partner organizations throughout Chicago. Ticket prices for events range from free admission to $150, with an average ticket price of $30. Tickets are on sale at EyeOnIndia.org.
The evening of classical Indian music will feature Abhisek Lahiri, one of the youngest top-notch sarod players of All India Radio and National Television-Kolkata; classical Indian musician Subrata Bhattacharya and Chicago jazz guitarist Fareed Haque. The performances are 4:30 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 7, at the Bengali Association of Greater Chicago, 1148 N. Main St., Glendale Heights. Tickets are $25, $35, or $50.
Eye on India Festival President Anuradha Behari of Chicago created the festival after attending the Jaipur Literature Festival, one of the largest of its kind in the world. She wished to replicate this spirit of collaboration and discovery, and share the depth and breadth of modern India in her hometown.
"Professionally I have witnessed a keen interest from U.S. business leaders to better understand their business colleagues in India, and a mutual desire to build and strengthen relationships," she said. "There is also a growing curiosity in the general population about contemporary Indian culture that is not being fulfilled. Since Chicago is already known for its world-class festivals, the time felt right to establish a new festival that is providing an opportunity to foster dialogue and build cultural ties between India and the U.S."
