Police investigating report of man approaching boy near Schaumburg school

Schaumburg police are investigating the circumstances of a man approaching and offering a ride to a student near Enders-Salk Elementary School Thursday morning.

According to a statement from Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54, the boy was walking along Sagamore Drive on his way to school when the driver of a black, 4-door Honda Civic or Honda Accord approached him. The boy ran away and the driver did not pursue, according to the school district.

After arriving at school safely, the boy informed his teacher and police were contacted.

The man was described as possibly of Indian descent, 25 to 35 years old, with short black hair, dark skin and wearing a gray sweatshirt. He reportedly drove away east on Sagamore and was last seen southbound on Salem Drive.

In its statement, the school district asks parents to remind their children about ways to stay safe on the way to and from school, or anytime they are outside. Among the tips: encourage children to walk with a buddy or have an older student accompany them; check out the neighborhood with your children and warn them of potential hazards; point out homes of people you know and other safe places where they can go for help; tell your children to always refuse to go anywhere with people they don't know, and if someone they don't know stops to ask directions, teach your students to step well back so they can get away fast; and instruct them to always say "no" if a grown-up invites them into their car or home, unless you have given them permission.

Any questions can be directed to the Schaumburg Police Department at (847) 882-3534.
