See 2013 documentary 'Honor Diaries' May 21 in Geneva

The community is invited to watch the 2013 documentary "Honor Diaries" at 7 p.m. Friday, May 22, at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva, 110 S. Second St.

The film, which debuted at the Chicago International Film Festival, features nine courageous women's rights advocates with connections to Muslim-majority societies who are engaged in a dialogue about gender inequality. "Honor Diaries" discusses how many women are treated like property, forced into marriage, and subjected to female genital mutilation.

Winner of the Interfaith Award for Best Documentary at the St. Louis International Film Festival, this film asks whether culture is used as an excuse for abuse.

The film is part of the free monthly fourth-Friday Film program that is sponsored by the Social Justice Team of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva. The public is encouraged to register at uusg.org/friday-flicks/ to receive email notices of future programs.
