Chicago man charged in fatal I-55 DUI crash
A 44-year-old Chicago man is being held in DuPage County on $750,000 bail charged with aggravated driving under the influence of drugs in an accident that killed a motorcyclist on Interstate 55.
Prosecutors said Fawzi Ottman, of the 4000 block of West Potomac Avenue in Chicago, had opiates and cannabis in his system around 5 p.m. on April 17 when he drove his car into Daniel Dacanay of Chicago.
Prosecutors say just prior to the crash, Ottman was driving erratically southbound on I-55, near County Line Road, and swerved his vehicle partially onto the shoulder of the road and struck Dacanay, pushing him into the vehicle in front of him.
After striking Dacanay, Ottman continued to drive for about 194 feet, dragging Dacanay at least part of the way, before coming to a stop.
Ottman was in the hospital under guard since the accident until late Wednesday night when he was taken to DuPage County jail.
Ottman's next court appearance is scheduled for May 18 in front of Judge George Bakalis.
