Kishwaukee orchestra to present spring concert

The Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra will present its spring concert, "The Rite of Spring," its 38th season finale, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 2, in Boutell Memorial Concert Hall in the Music Building of Northern Illinois University, DeKalb.

The KSO will perform Symphony No. 31 ("Paris") by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, "Songs of a Wayfarer," by Gustav Mahler, featuring Gerard Sundberg, baritone, and "The Rite of Spring," by Igor Stravinsky. Music director Linc Smelser will present a free preconcert lecture at 6:30 p.m. in Room 173 in the NIU Music Building. This performance is supported in part by the Ideal Industries Foundation with a generous gift from Jean Juday.

Tickets can be purchased at the door the night of the concert. All seats are general admission; no reserved seating. Individual ticket prices are $15, $10 for seniors, 62 and older, $10 for students, and $5 for children younger than age 12.

On Tuesday, May 5, the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra is one of the organizations participating in Give Local DeKalb County. The DeKalb County Nonprofit Partnership, an initiative of DeKalb County Community Foundation, is facilitating Give Local DeKalb County as part of Give Local America, a national day of local giving. The 24-hour crowdfunding event provides critical funding for community partners across the country.

Individuals giving to the Kishwaukee Symphony Orchestra will have a choice to direct their donations to either the KSO's endowment fund or general operating fund. The minimum donation is $25, but there is no limit on how much can be donated. A $500 donation can support a student scholarship and a $1,200 donation can recognize the donor as a named chair sponsor for the entire season. For the second year in a row, DCCF has donated $20,000 in proportional matching funds to amplify every donation that comes in on May 5.
