Burton, Naperville Central ace Wheaton North
Tuesday's boys volleyball match was pretty much won at the service line by Naperville Central in its DuPage Valley Conference clash against Wheaton North.
The host Redhawks employed a ferocious serving attack that featured 10 aces, four in a row by Jack Burton in the second game, to put away Wheaton North 25-15, 25- 17.
"This was unusual," said Wheaton North coach John Noe. "I've never called time out to stop someone who got four aces in a row."
"We work on aggressive serving in practice," Burton said. "Not just making it go in, but going after it. Trying to pick our spots and make people move around. And tonight showed the work is really paying off."
In the first game the Redhawks (17-5, 2-1) were leading 8-7 when Tyler Stefani stepped to the service line and proceeded to put down a trio of aces and a kill to on an 8-point surge that broke the game open.
"Tyler had some amazing serves," Burton said. "It's really hard to return when he's hitting the ball that hard. It was great to get that separation during his run."
As in the first game, the Falcons (3-15, 0-3) started respectably, staying within striking distance and giving the Redhawks a challenge.
Then with the score 13-11 Stefani put down a kill for the Naperville Central sideout, and then Burton stepped up to serve.
He put away four straight aces to break the second game open 18-12.
"I may have done that once before in a high school match," Burton said. "I was just trying to put it inbounds."
Kacper Mazurek, Jeremy Parker and Matt Johnson each added an ace to add to the Falcons serve-receive woes.
"We work on serve-receive a lot," Noe said. "Tonight we didn't put our best performance out there. But they had some great servers back there. We really struggled to get our bodies in front of those jump topspins."
"Our service game was great," said Naperville Central coach Roger Strausburger. "We also did a good job of cutting down on the errors that have made us inconsistent recently. We just worked to play as clean a game as possible."
Burton finished with 5 kills and 3 digs for the Redhawks and Matt Skowronski controlled the middle with 5 kills and 2 blocks. Setter Kevin Prazak dished out 19 assists.
"We started off both sets well," Noe said. "When the ball was there, our setter Trevor Hegranes did a good job of spreading it around to our hitters and running our middles. But we struggled getting the ball to the setter."
Hegranes had 11 assists and 2 digs, while Max Peckenpaugh was the kill leader with 6, followed by Sam Bedrossian with 4 kills, 2 digs and a block.
