Mikosz, Wheeling power past Rolling Meadows
Wheeling's softball team used 5 extra-base hits, including a double and triple from Wisconsin-Whitewater recruit Nikki Mikosz (2-for-2, RBI) en route to a 10-5 victory over visiting Rolling Meadows on Thursday.
Other top hitters for the Wildcats (2-8, 2-3) were Christina Ambrose (1-for-3, triple, RBI), Megan Olsen (3-for-4, 2 RBI), Lauren Hart (2-for-4, RBI), Sydney Kaplan (double), Abby Greenspan (double), RBI) and freshman Dakota Medrano (1-for-3, RBI), who earned her second win on the mound in as many days.
The freshman struck out six while sophomore Lydia Schultz had 5 strikeouts for Meadows (1-15, 0-6).
Leading the Mustangs' offense were Paige Connor (2-for-4, RBI), Lauren Hattory (double), Megan King (2-for-3, RBI), Meghan Slowik (1-for-3, double, RBI) and Amanda Elkins (RBI).
Fremd 13, Hoffman Estates 2 (5 inn.): Julie Josten (2-for-4, 3 runs, 2 RBI) and Julie Wacker (2-for-4, 4 RBI, 1 run) each belted their second homers of the spring as Fremd improved to 16-2 and 5-1 in the MSL West.
Vikings junior pitcher Lea Barrett ran her record to 6-0 with a 4-hitter that included 3 strikeouts and no walks.
Other top hitters for Fremd were Reagan Schneider (2-for-4, 2 RBI), Addison Stremel (double), Alyssa Garcia (2-for-4, 2 runs, RBI), Holly Straup (2-for-3, 1 run) and freshman catcher Lexi D'Ambrosio (2-for-3, double, 1 run, 3 RBI). D'Ambrosio's double hit the top of the fence and fell back into play.
Freshman Giselle Velazquez went 2-for-3 and was on base in all 3 at-bats to lead the host Hawks (8-8, 2-4) while teammates Mary Bean (double), Tracy Osimowicz and Alyssa Galan also had hits.
Maine West 23, Highland Park 3 (5 inn.): Maine West junior second baseman Jordan Hart hit a 3-run homer and Grace Feldkamp was the winning pitcher for Maine West, which improved to 5-7 and 2-2 in the CSL North.
