Believers cannot force their faith on others

A letter to the editor in the April 5 edition of the Daily Herald titled "We are ignoring our religious rights" misses an important point. Businesses are commercial enterprises, not bastions of religious faith.

Freedom of religion means the state cannot dictate theological tenets or the practice of faith, but the bargain cuts both ways.

Holders of faith cannot force their beliefs on the public. Believe and practice what you will within the confines of your faith, but in secular activities, you are subject to secular laws that are meant to protect the rights of everyone.

Freedom of religion is not a license to encroach on the liberties of others.
