Incumbent trustees voted out in Winfield
Two incumbents have lost their bids for re-election in Winfield's village trustee race. Newcomers were elected to the three open seats on the board Tuesday.
According to unofficial results, with all 13 precincts reporting, Dennis Hogan was the top vote-getter with 1,420 votes. Carl Sorgatz followed with 1,404 votes, and Robert Greer received 1,295 votes.
Rob Hanlon, Jay Olson, incumbent Tony Reyes, incumbent James Hughes and Robert Borsodi received 1,034, 899, 897, 329 and 237 votes, respectively.
Two political slates emerged during the race. Reyes ran with Olson and Hanlon. Meanwhile, running mates Hogan and Greer gained the support of Winfield United for a Better Community.
Hogan is retired from the Army Corps of Engineers and served as chairman of Winfield's Economic Development Task Force and as chairman of the village's comprehensive plan steering committee. He said during the campaign that he would like to see “smart” commercial development along Roosevelt Road, and not just “anything that comes along.”
Greer is a college professor who has served as editor/publisher of The Winfield Express newspaper. He is a member of the village's plan commission.
Sorgatz is a credit union vice president who serves in the nonelected position of the village treasurer. He previously served on village's plan commission. He said during the campaign that the village needs to seek new revenue.
“Development is going to be key and essential in this village going forward,” Sorgatz said. “Sales tax revenue is really the driver we need to be looking out for.”
During the campaign, all the candidates in the race said that commercial development of Roosevelt Road is key to raising much-needed revenue for the village.
The candidates also agreed that village officials should work more with Central DuPage Hospital to spark commercial development in downtown Winfield.
