Man accidentally shoots self at McHenry gun range

A man accidentally shot himself at a McHenry gun range Thursday afternoon, officials said.

The McHenry Township Fire Protection District was called to Alpha Range, 5002 Elm St., McHenry, at 4:32 p.m. because a 56-year-old man had shot himself in the upper leg, Battalion Chief David Hardwood said.

The man was conscious when emergency responders arrived, Hardwood said, and he was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville by Flight for Life.

The man was stable and his injuries were not life-threatening, but Hardwood said he did need surgery for the wound.

The department has never before been called to Alpha Range for a shooting injury, Hardwood said, and no one else was injured at the scene. The McHenry Police Department is investigating.
