One injured in Wheaton kitchen fire

Flammable liquids were the likely cause of a Wheaton kitchen fire that injured one person, authorities said.

Firefighters said they responded around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday to a report of a fire in a house on the 700 block of South Gables Boulevard. They said they brought the fire under control in minutes.

The house was being remodeled and the only person in it at the time was a worker, who was taken to a hospital with a minor injury.

Officials said the fire was accidental and appears to be related to the use of solvents to strip cabinets in the kitchen. The exact ignition source and damage estimates are undetermined, but the fire was contained to the kitchen.

Firefighters are reminding residents to properly dispose of rags and combustible materials with flammable liquids on them by soaking them in water and placing them outdoors, away from any structures.
