Benet Academy celebrates girls basketball state title

The Benet Academy girls basketball team celebrated its state championship with students and faculty Wednesday during a pep rally at the Lisle school.

The Lady Redwings defeated Fremd 61-39 Saturday at Redbird Arena in Normal to claim the Illinois High School Association girls basketball Class 4A state crown.

Head Coach Joe Kilbride said the victory marked the first time Benet has brought home a state championship in hoops.

“It's a tremendous accomplishment,” Kilbride said. “I'm very proud of them and happy for them.”

Students cheered as the players walked along a red carpet lined by cheerleaders.

“It was one of the best things that has ever happened to the team,” senior Morgan Thomalla said. “We worked hard for it and we're excited to be here.”

Senior Emily Eshoo said the victory was a great ending to a great season.

“This was an awesome way to end,” Eshoo said. “There was really no better way to finish off the season, especially being a senior.”
