I bring an in-depth understanding of Schaumburg's budget and how to continue to provide the highest level of service while keeping fees to a minimum. Experience does count for something. Businesses and residents wouldn't move into Schaumburg if it wasn't as well run and respected and admired as it is and my experience will maintain these attributes. What is your opinion of your community's present level of local sales and property taxes? Is the tax just right, too low or too high? Explain.Schaumburg has been fortunate to be on the receiving end of a wonderful sales tax base that has helped it grow and prosper over the decades. The taxes paid into Schaumburg have allowed it to maintain the roads and build a better community with the use of those funds. If it wasn't for those tax dollars, Schaumburg would not have the infrastructure it does today which includes; good roads, excellent Police and Fire departments, and ability to provide the finest possible services to its businesses and residents. It is important to note that Schaumburg has reduced its property taxes every year by up-to 4% a year for the last 4 years. I will continue to reduce the tax burden on businesses and residents every year.Rate the efficiency of your town's police and fire coverage. Are the departments well prepared for the next decade? What, if anything, should be changed? Do you have specific public safety concerns?I am proud to say, Schaumburg has one of the finest Police and Fire departments around. Both are well run by knowledgeable and experienced Chief's that are forward thinkers. They are constantly on the lookout for the latest technology to improve their department, make them more responsive and helpful to the community, and keep the businesses and residents as safe as possible.Where, if anywhere, could the current budget be trimmed, and conversely, are there areas the budget does not give enough money to?Schaumburg functions as a fiscally responsible community by making certain that the budget is balanced every year. As a member of the Board of Trustees, I help to ensure there are sufficient funds to pay for all infrastructure projects as well as being able to put away some funds for the next rainy day. I believe Schaumburg does a good job of trying to internally balance the needs of all departments so that all areas receive sufficient funds to operate at their best. What's one good idea you have to better the community that no one is talking about yet? While Schaumburg has a wonderful 400+ seat theater, I continue to believe that building a first-class 2000+ seat performing arts center, will bring premier acts outside of downtown Chicago. This will attract people from all over that will not only attend the performing arts center but shop in Schaumburg's stores, eat in Schaumburg's restaurants, and stay in Schaumburg's hotels providing valuable sales tax dollars to maintain Schaumburg as the place to be.What other issues, if any, are important to you as a candidate for this office? If we want Schaumburg to continue to be the best place to live and work, we need to continue to look to what can keep Schaumburg vibrant and current. Businesses do it all the time. Woodfield recently announced a major remodeling that is expected to improve their attendance. The Board of Trustees need to remain vigilant by doing the same when making decisions for the Village. For example, maintaining a balance budget is a critical piece of the puzzle. Every household needs to operate this way in order to ensure that they are living within their means and prevent them from losing everything when the next emergency happens. The Village of Schaumburg needs to operate in this fashion as well. Please name one current leader who most inspires you. While not current leaders, I most admire people like Teddy Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and John F Kennedy. They all had vision and fought for freedom. What's the biggest lesson you learned at home growing up?My parents, coming from Scotland, taught me to be frugal, spend carefully, and how to save. I have followed that advice all my life.If life gave you one do-over, what would you spend it on?Save my dog that managed to get out of my yard and get hit by a car. Terrible thing to lose your friend. What was your favorite subject in school and how did it help you in later life?Math was my favorite. My love of numbers and managing budgets has helped to ensure Schaumburg has a balanced budget and lives within its means. If you could give your children only one piece of advice, what would it be?Don't worry about the "Joneses". Figure out what makes you happy and pursue it. It's an old saying but you can't buy happiness.
