Rauner off to a scary start
I voted for Bruce Rauner, not because he was running as a Republican and not because I believed he was the knight in shining armor who was sure to rescue the damsel in distress that we know as Illinois. I voted for him because my other choice was politics as usual. I voted for him because he does have an impressive record of success in the business world and just might be able to turn things around in spite of the power structure that has been in place for decades and has all but destroyed this state.
Right out of the gate, though, he has disappointed me.
How can he justify paying unreasonable higher salaries for his staff while demanding other government employees take cuts? Secondly, after railing against all taxes, he wants to add a new one. He wants to tax services. That means taxes on labor as well as parts. The hours spent repairing your car, cutting your grass, plowing snow, and on and on could be taxed.
This is huge. Once this is in place, all governing bodies will follow suit. Counties, towns and others will add a tax.
I'm still hoping to see this state on sound footing again and I'm hoping Rauner can accomplish that. These two things, though, will only add to our woes.
