Former Wheaton councilwoman recommended to fill Sanguinetti's seat

A former Wheaton City Council member likely will be taking a seat on the council again to temporarily fill a vacant spot left by the resignation of Evelyn Pacino Sanguinetti late last year.

Mayor Michael Gresk announced Friday that he is recommending the appointment of Liz Corry to serve what remains of Sanguinetti's 4-year term. Sanguinetti resigned in December to prepare for her new role as Illinois lieutenant governor.

The council will consider Gresk's recommendation on Tuesday, Feb. 17. Should Corry be appointed, she will serve an estimated 10 to 12 weeks, until the two newly elected at-large council members are sworn in during the first or second city council meeting in May.

The other at-large seat that will be open this spring is currently held by John Prendiville, who is running for re-election. The other three candidates for the two seats are Ron Almiron, Suzanne Fitch and Tony Lyons.

Corry served on the council from 2003 to 2011. She has been involved with numerous organizations in the community, including the Downtown Wheaton Association, the DuPage County Development Commission, the Hubble School Task Force, Rotary Club of Central DuPage AM and the League of Women Voters.

Last year, Corry also served as co-chairwoman of the facilitating team for Wheaton Warrenville Unit District 200's Engage200 efforts.

Gresk said Corry was the strongest of the 10 candidates who applied for the temporary position because of her past experience on the council and understanding of the budgeting process, which is something the council will be working on for the next two months.

"The other nine people all brought a certain level of expertise and experience, a toolbox that they could come to the city council with. The other people were qualified, but she had far superior experience in dealing with the city council," he said.
