St. Charles mall Kane County's biggest warming center

The Quad in St. Charles is not only a draw for potential new shops. It also may be the biggest draw for people looking to get warm today.

Previously known as Charlestowne Mall, it is the largest designated warming location in Kane County. However, there is no food court open in the mall to warm your insides. A doughnut and coffee shop just opened near the lower level northeast entrance in December. There are 29 warming centers in Kane County.

Also, people in the western portion of Kane County were literally isolated beyond even police help as of about 6 p.m. Sunday. Kane County Sheriff spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler said all roads west of Route 47 were "basically impassable" as was the new bridge on Route 38 near the border with DuPage County. Anyone who was stuck, he noted, would have to remain that way for "an extended period of time." By about 7 a.m. Monday, the sheriff's Facebook page said there were no reports of vehicles in ditches and roads were open but slippery.
