Wauconda students keep Meals For All rolling

Submitted by Wauconda High School

Wauconda students Dominic Mues and Chris Nachman have continued the tradition of Meals For All, a one dollar community dinner held monthly at the Moose Lodge.

Many citizens have been affected positively by this dinner. It gives them chances to socialize and enjoy a restaurant quality meal for only $1.

Upon leaving the December dinner, one regular made sure to voice her opinion on how the dinner has affected her and her mother.

"Thank you guys so much. My mother lives in Liberty Arms (a local retirement home) and she literally looks forward to this dinner every month. You don't know how much it means. Keep the meals coming."

Meals For All would not be possible without help from more than 100 Wauconda High School Future Business Leaders of America members. Their volunteer work helps the dinners run smoothly each month and ensures a positive experience for every guest.

Also making the dinner possible are the restaurants that sponsor it each month. So far this year restaurants like Burrito Express, Three Amigas, Olive Garden, Panhandler's, Stacie Cakes, Bulldog Grill, Honey Hill Coffee, Middleton's and Dock's restaurants have donated food to the Wauconda FBLA chapter.

The success of Meals For All continues to grow from a modest beginning. Three years ago, Wauconda Township Supervisor Glenn Swanson pitched the idea to Wendy Mills, the Wauconda FBLA chapter adviser.

The number of attendees has grown through the years, with this year's dinners averaging about 80 guests. The November meal served 127 guests, a Meals For All record. As a whole over three years, Meals For All has served more than 1,600 meals.

Dominic and Christopher receive strong and consistent support from their chapter and community. The Wauconda FBLA Community Service Committee helps pass out the fliers each month to promote the dinner. Glenn Swanson also shows ongoing support for the event, dedicating his time to drive a bus to pick up citizens of Liberty Arms and John Kuester Manor, local retirement homes, each month.

As Dominic Mues said, "It's really a community effort. We could not do it ourselves. The support we receive is unbelievable and allows us to keep Meals For All growing."
