Huntley routs Dundee-Crown for 20th win

Stifling, relentless and aggressive.

Those words aptly describe Huntley's defensive effort in a 49-26 win over Dundee-Crown in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division girls basketball action in Carpentersville Tuesday night.

With Huntley pressuring every pass and shot, D-C (11-14, 2-5) could only muster 10 baskets in 40 attempts for 25 percent. The Chargers, who committed 24 turnovers, made of 3-of-13 from 3-point range for 23 percent.

"We were able to force some turnovers off our press," said Huntley coach Steve Raethz. "We were able to get some tips and generate some offense off our defense."

Dundee-Crown coach Sarah Miller was impressed with the Red Raiders' pressure defense.

"Their buzz defense is tough to get good shots off," said Miller. "We forced our offense against their pressure and we didn't capitalize on our opportunities."

Huntley (20-4, 7-0), winners of 12 straight and 17-of-18, started fast, scoring the first 10 points of the game as Ali Andrews scored 6 points along with 2 points each from Kayla Barreto and Morgan Clausen to give the Red Raiders a 10-0 lead with 3:13 left in the first quarter.

Huntley wouldn't score another point in the quarter as D-C, with 5 points coming from Creighton Fed including a 3-pointer, scored the final 5 points to slice the lead to 10-5 after 8 minutes.

The Red Raiders seized control of the game by starting the second quarter on a 10-2 run. Andrews scored 6 and Kelli Rubino and Paige Renkosik scored 2 each and the Red Raiders led 20-7 with 2:36 remaining in the first half.

Leading 26-12 midway through the third quarter, the Red Raiders ensured victory by rampaging to a 13-0 run. Andrews scored 8 and Barreto 4 as Huntley held a 27-point, 39-12 advantage with 1:45 left in the third quarter.

The Red Raiders' biggest lead of the contest was 28, 44-16, after a putback from Clausen with 4:46 remaining in the game.

Andrews, 8-of-14 from the floor, scored 18 points with 13 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. She now stands 48 points from tying Samantha Mader's school record of 1,655 career points.

Senior Kelli Rubino came off the Red Raider bench to score 8 points with 2 assists.

'I just have to stay in the game when I am on the bench and be positive and keep my spirits up," said Rubino. "When I get in the game I want to provide energy and communicate. That is important."

Melissa Barker buried two 3-pointers to lead the Chargers with 6 points.
