Rauner picks Lombard man as acting head of VA

Gov. Bruce Rauner appointed Harold Sawyer of Lombard to be the acting director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs Monday.

Sawyer has worked with the agency for 33 years. He served in the Navy from 1969 to 1970.

"I came up through the ranks," Sawyer said. "You work hard and you get recognized for your plans and what you do."

A Rauner spokeswoman said Sawyer will be in place until a permanent director takes over.

Sawyer said he'll make sure current programs are executed properly. He added that addressing the needs of female veterans is one of his main initiatives.
