Deerfield Parkway reopens after gas line damaged in Buffalo Grove

Deerfield Parkway in Buffalo Grove reopened and nearby train service resumed at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday after both were shut down temporarily when a 6-inch natural gas line was damaged by an excavator.

North Shore Gas crews called to the scene were able to stop the flow of gas, ending all travel restrictions, according to the village.

Thirteen commercial customers of North Shore Gas were affected by the gas shut-off, said Jennifer Block, director of media relations for the company.

The damage to the line on the 600 block of East Deerfield Parkway was caused by a third party's excavator, she added.

Metra and Canadian National trains were stopped until authorities confirmed that the natural gas concentration was below explosive limits, the village reported.

Metra stopped one inbound train - number 114 on the North Central line - just north of Buffalo Grove, spokesman Tom Miller said. Not many Canadian National trains use that line and spokesman Patrick Waldron didn't immediately know of any delays in service caused by the leak.

At the nearby The Apartments of Windbrooke Crossing, some residents were initially unable to return home due to the road closures, Leasing Consultant Patricia Thomas said.
