Guided tours of Volo Bog:
Guided public tours of Volo Bog in Ingleside are available at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. most Saturdays and Sundays. Visitors can take refuge among the tamaracks, deciduous pines that sometimes host long-eared owls and white-winged and red crossbills. Leatherleaf keeps its leaves but loses its chlorophyll - leaving it leathery brown for winter and easy to see. Carnivorous pitcher plants, wool grass, water dock and other wetland plants also take on their winter dress. All ages are welcome. Tours are for individuals, families and small groups of nine or fewer. Reservations are not required except for groups of 10 or more. Call (815) 344-1294 or visit http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/.
