Hawks can't withstand Caps' scoring barrage, fall 3-2

After going seven straight periods without scoring a goal at the United Center, Brandon Saad helped the Blackhawks get off the schneid in a big way Friday, but it wasn't enough in a 3-2 loss to Washington.

The young forward, who was elevated to the second line after Patrick Sharp was injured, opened the scoring at 17:12 of the first period with a one-timer off a perfect pass from Marian Hossa.

“It felt really good; the team's been struggling at home,” Saad said of his second goal of the season. “Hoss made a great play.”

When Duncan Keith, playing in his 700th NHL game, blasted home a power play goal 56 seconds into the second period, it sure looked like the Hawks were home free.

Nope.

The Captitals turned it up notch in the second period, scoring three goals, including a pair in the final minute, to stun what was a festive Friday night crowd.
