Cantigny announces 5K results

Christopher Zielinski captured first place at the Cantigny 5K with a time of 16:59.37. The 39-year-old from Plainfield averaged 5:29 minutes per mile.

The Cantigny 5K, run on Nov. 1, celebrated its 11th anniversary with a full field of 1,000 runners and walkers.

Second place overall went to Wheaton resident Mike Ruggio, 52. Third place belonged to Gary Moneysmith, 43, also from Wheaton.

The top female runner was Danielle Eagan, 26, of Wayne. Her chip time was 20:59.88.

Second and third places in the female division, respectively, went to Samantha Poglitsch, 12, of Wheaton and Lydia Chinchilla, 12, of Glen Ellyn. Poglitsch won the female division in 2012 at age 10.

Wheaton resident Angelo Ruggio, 8, was tops among 30 entrants in the one-mile Cantigny Youth Run with a time of 6 minutes, 52 seconds. Second and third places, respectively, went to a pair of Wheaton 10-year-olds, Matthew Musulin and Kylie James. The Youth Run was for ages 6 to 10.

The Cantigny 5K Run/Walk is held annually in association with Veterans Day. Net proceeds benefit the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans in Wheaton. A check will be presented to the shelter Tuesday, Nov. 11, as part of Cantigny Park's Veterans Day Luminary Tribute.

The Cantigny 5K has generated more than $51,000 for Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans since 2008, the first year the race became associated with the shelter.

The 12th annual Cantigny 5K Run/Walk will be Nov. 7, 2015. Online registration begins in April at SignMeUp.com.
