Science & Arts Academy in Des Plaines cuts hair for a cause

Some students, teachers and parents at a Des Plaines gifted school are walking around with new haircuts today in support of those who don't have any hair at all.

The Science & Arts Academy, 1825 Miner St., hosted a "Cut for a Cause" event Thursday to donate the locks that will be used to make wigs for women and children with cancer.

Nine students, seven teachers and two parents donated their hair - with lengths ranging from 7 to 14 inches. Donations 8 inches and above were donated to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, said Mindy Keller, the school's director of admissions and marketing.

Students purchased raffle tickets over the past few weeks to win a chance to cut the hair or shave the head of one of their teachers. Those ticket sales and other donations yielded $200, which was given to Pantene Beautiful Lengths and the St. Baldrick's Foundation, which raises funds for cancer research.
