North Central exhibit shows photography in 'Another Light'
The images in the "Another Light" photography exhibit opening soon at North Central College have an ethereal feel that makes them look almost as if the images were taken in another world.
"Another Light" features work by Darlene Poloniak and Jan Wessels using cameras adapted to filter out visible light, allowing for infrared spectrum light to be rendered, and focuses the artwork on the inner spiritual terrain.
Poloniak's work alludes to the power and richness of the inner life, while Wessels' images portray the intersection of an inner spiritual realm experienced simultaneously with the outer reality of our physical world.
The free exhibit opens Wednesday, Oct. 29, and continues through Dec. 11 in the college's Oesterle Library Gallery, 320 E. School St., Naperville. An artists' reception will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9.
Poloniak and Wessels were founding members of the Chicago Photo Union, a group that had exhibited together throughout the Chicago area. Since the group's separation, the two have not exhibited together. However, upon viewing each other's current work, they saw an intersection of photographic concerns and thought it was time to collaborate once again.
Poloniak heads Darlene Poloniak Photography in Skokie and specializes in special events. Wessels works in classical photography, digital imaging and alternative photo/darkroom processes. Currently an instructor of photography at Chicago's Truman College, she has served as a gallery director, curator, graphic designer, picture editor, photo stylist and newspaper/editorial photographer.
