Congregation Beth Judea hosts Torah Scribe

A rare and unique opportunity was provided to the members of Congregation Beth Judea on October 19, when Torah Scribe Rabbi Yohanan Nathan led a program on the making of a Sefer (books of the) Torah. This special Sefer Torah was commissioned by member Jan Charman and his family in memory of Jan's late wife Estelle. This Sefer Torah will eventually be housed in the Congregation's Beit Midrash (the Congregation's House of Study). The Charman family invited the synagogue to celebrate the creation of the of the scroll at the first of three events during which the Congregation will learn how a Sefer Torah is created and what the work of a scribe entails.

The program began with remarks by Rabbi Pivo and Jan Charman followed by a presentation by Rabbi Nathan including displaying completed Torah panels, a hands on calligraphy practice by all attendees, and repair of a damaged Sefer Torah. Rabbi Nathan will return to Congregation Beth Judea on February 15 for the second of three programs on the making of this wonderful Sefer Torah.
