Trestman trying to figure out what to do next

After Sunday's 27-14 loss to the Dolphins, the Bears are 0-3 at Soldier Field and have been outscored 88-31. They're 3-1 on the road, outscoring their opponents 106-83. What's the difference?

"I don't think there should be a difference," said Bears coach Marc Trestman. "If anything, I think we should be playing better at home. We should be taking advantage of our facility and our players to play at a higher level consistently."

The 0-3 start at home is the first since 2004, Lovie Smith's first year as head coach. The Bears finished 5-11 that season, including 2-6 at home.

Trestman's team goes on the road to face the New England Patriots on Sunday, After an off week, the Bears travel to Green Bay for a Sunday night game against the Packers.

"We're just not executing to the degree that we have on the road," Trestman said. "We haven't executed collectively in all three phases."

Offensive left tackle Jermon Bushrod, who was back in the starting lineup after missing two games with a knee / ankle injury, spoke for many of his teammates.

"This hurts," he said. "We're 0-3 at home, and it's unacceptable. We need to come out here and we need to get a 'W,' not just for our fans but for us. When we're capable of having success and we don't, it doesn't feel good."

Sore losers:

Shouting could be heard through the Bears' closed locker room doors in the bowels of Soldier Field as the media waited outside during the customary cooling off period - which was needed after a third straight home loss.

"It's supposed to hurt," was the most clearly heard comment from behind the closed doors.

"It was emotional," quarterback Jay Cutler said. "It was a tough loss. After a good win at Atlanta, we wanted to come back home and get a big win here, get some momentum going into New England.

"Guys are really down on this one, myself included."

Tough assignment:

One week after offensive right tackle Jordan Mills had 2 false starts against the Falcons, he was beaten by the Dolphins' three-time Pro Bowl defensive end Cameron Wake for a sack and strip of Jay Cutler. Wake recovered the Cutler fumble which led to a Miami field goal.

"He's a Pro Bowler for a reason," Mills said. "Going against him was a great challenge. He got me a couple of times. I respect him, and it was a good game."

Fits and starts:

Offensive tackle Jermon Bushrod lamented the Bears' 3 turnovers, but he said there were other concerns in Sunday's loss.

"We had opportunities to go and get drives and get points but we didn't get it done," Bushrod said. "Too many three-and-outs and all that."

Aside from their two TD drives, the Bears had just 71 total yards on their seven other possessions.

"We weren't executing the way we're capable of," Bushrod said. "Yeah, the turnovers are going to happen, but you have to find a way to overcome them, (especially with) the way our defense played. We kept them on the field too long."

By the numbers:

The defense recorded 4 sacks for the second straight game and third time this season. Defensive tackle Jeremiah Ratliff had 3 solos and split a sack with Jared Allen, who also had a sack last week after getting blanked in the first five weeks. Allen has 130 sacks since entering the league in 2004, more than anyone else in that time frame. ... Rookie punter Pat O'Donnell had a gross average of 53.0 yards on 3 boots, the highest gross average by a Bears punter with at least 3 attempts since Nov. 27, 1997, when Todd Sauerbrun averaged 53.6.

Back in action:

Rookie cornerback Kyle Fuller left midway through the third quarter with a hip injury and was replaced by Sherrick McManis for the remainder of the game.

It was McManis' first game back after missing the previous four with a quadriceps / knee injury.

Sitting it out:

Sunday's inactives were linebackers Lance Briggs (ribs) and Jon Bostic (back), safeties Chris Conte (shoulder) and Ahmad Dixon (hamstring), cornerback Terrance Mitchell, defensive end Trevor Scott and offensive tackle Charles Leno.
