Fifth-place Pumpkin finish for Libertyville

Libertyville's girls volleyball team tuned up for Wednesday's North Suburban Conference championship match against Wauconda by winning four of five matches in Maine West's Pumpkin Tournament.

Alex Basler had 30 kills and 7 blocks for the Wildcats, whose only loss was a 23-25, 25-19, 25-16 decision to Downers Grove South. Libertyville (27-5) settled for fifth place, posting wins over Belleville West (25-15, 25-23), Maine West (25-20, 25-13), Maine East (25-13, 25-15) and Evanston (25-23, 25-17).

Coach Greg Loika said his Wildcats were missing several starters due to PSAT testing. Sinead Prentiss dished out 77 assists for Libertyville, while Morgan O'Brien led the defense with 88 digs. Francesca Fusco and Anna Lillydahl added 27 and 25 kills, respectively.

Grayslake North invite: Warren took second place, losing a pair of matches to Fremd, by scores of 25-22, 22-25, 15-13 and 25-15, 25-20.

Kim Hengesh and Jenna Walczak of the Blue Devils were named to all-tournament team. Warren picked up wins over Grayslake North (25-10, 25-7), Round Lake (25-16, 25-14) and Wauconda (15-13, 25-16).

Hengesh rang up 20 kills and 12 blocks, while Walczak had 48 kills, 52 digs and 6 blocks. Warren's other contributors included Lauren Frericks (6 aces, 15 kills, 52 assists, 35 digs), Nicole Berzin (49 assists, 42 digs) and Lindsey Biedron (16 kills, 40 digs, 5 blocks).

Wauconda (24-7, 4-1 tourney) placed Sara Sexton on the all-tournament team after she totaled 49 kills. Wauconda finished third, defeating Vernon Hills JV (25-14, 25-12), Mundelein (25-18, 25-16), Grayslake North (13-25, 25-19, 17-16) and Mundelein again (28-26, 25-22). LeAnne Sakowicz added 38 kills, 54 assists and 47 digs for Wauconda. Ashley Anderson posted 69 digs.
