Girls volleyball: Warren fights past Deerfield

Warren's girls volleyball team was all in for its "pink out" match.

Jenna Walczak's 7 kills, 3 blocks and 2 aces helped the Blue Devils defeat Deerfield 25-19, 25-19 in a nonconference match Thursday night.

"Warren girls volleyball knows how to throw a party," Warren coach Julie Filippo said. "The theme was 'Fight' and both teams played very well. Warren won the fight, but the real success was they raised $1,500 to donate to Making Strides of Lake County."

Warren's Nicole Berzin served 9 of 9 with 2 aces and set 19 of 19 with 7 assists. Lauren Frericks of the Blue Devils also had a productive night with 5 aces, 5 kills, 8 assists (20 of 20), 2 digs and 2 blocks. Warren's Kim Hengesh had 5 kills, 4 blocks and 6 digs, and Peyton Clark served 7 of 7 with 2 aces.

Carmel d. Nazareth: Morgan Meade had 10 kills, Sierra Kepski shined defensively again, and the host Corsairs won 25-23, 25-17 to improve to 27-5 and 4-2 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference.

"Tonight was a huge win," Carmel coach David Pazely said. "Playing great teams before the playoffs begin can help put your progress into perspective, and getting a quality win over a great team can boost momentum and help a team peak at the right time. Tonight was just that for the Corsairs. The girls put forth an incredible team effort. The energy in the gym was electric and the competition was top notch."

Nazareth limited Grace Schofield to 5 kills. Schofield did register 12 digs, second most on the team behind Kepski's 13.

"Naz had a game plan to stop Grace Schofield," Pazely said. "They put up a monster block against her in Game 1 and held her to 1 kill. I made a tactical change and shifted our lineup, and that block wasn't matched up against her in Game 2, and she had 4 kills in Game 2. Even though she didn't lead the way in kills, defensively she had 2 big blocks and 12 great digs."

Pazely called Meade and Kepski the "standout performers" in the match.

"When you talk defense, you have to talk Sierra, and she had 13 clutch digs and added 2 aces," Pazely said. "Morgan was huge offensively with 10 kills, 7 assists, an ace and 5 digs. With Naz's block so focused on Gracie, Morgan was able to capitalize on the mismatch. But the whole team contributed to the win tonight, more than just the players on the floor. The bench mob brought an energy to the court that no team could match and kept the girls on the floor flying around all night long. We had contributions from every player."

Carmel totaled 22 kills, 8 aces, 6 blocks and 48 digs.

"It takes a great performance to get a win over a great team, and tonight we showed our potential," Pazely said.

If Carmel wins next week against Marian Central and St. Viator, the Corsairs will win their first ESCC championship.

Grayslake Central d. Hampshire: The visiting Rams won 25-22, 25-14 in Fox Valley Fox action, as Hayley Peterson and Taylor O'Neill had 7 and 6 kills, respectively.

Allie Daul added 4 kills and 3 aces for Grayslake Central (19-14, 7-4), while Juliana Frusolone set 40 of 40 with 16 assists. Morgan Anderberg tallied 8 digs, and Jackie Hamrick slammed 4 kills. The Rams got 2 aces apiece from Dani Sentz, Peterson and Marie Gerbasi.
