Harper College hosts prime-time viewing of partial solar eclipse

So you overslept and missed that hoopla over the blood moon?

The next spectacle in the skies comes later this month, and Harper College will provide prime viewing.

A partial solar eclipse - when the moon passes between the sun and Earth - is set for the evening of Oct. 23. Visitors to Harper's Karl G. Henize Observatory can peer through filtered telescopes from 4 to 6 p.m. to catch the relatively rare sight - NASA says the next one over America won't happen until August 2017.

"We don't get many solar eclipses that are visible in the Chicago area, so they're always exciting," Harper Astronomy Outreach Coordinator Joe Kabbes said.

The observatory also will hold its final public observing hours of the year from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, and Saturday, Nov. 15.

The facility sits at the northeast corner of the Palatine campus, 1200 W. Algonquin Road. For details, visit Harpercollege.edu.
