Make it 7 straight for Prospect in MSL
You can take away its home course, but you can't take away its remarkable run of Mid-Suburban League championships.
Prospect's girls golf team, which has played and practiced exclusively on the road this season due to renovation to the Mt. Prospect Golf Club, continued its dominance in the MSL on Tuesday.
Led by senior Kacie O'Donnell's second-place finish (76) behind Barrington sophomore Reena Sulkar (74), the Knights captured a seventh straight MSL crown with a score of 332 on the par-72 Palatine Hills Golf Course.
Buffalo Grove, led by junior Emily Carnes's career-best 78, took second place followed by Barrington (344) and host Fremd (349). Also breaking 80 were Conant's Carly Bryeans and Fremd's Jaehee Hur, who shot 79s to tie for fourth place.
The shot of the day belonged to Barrington senior Bailee McDonald, who recorded a hole-in-one on the par-3 fourth hole.
"This season has been rough," said Knights coach Jim Hamann. "We've played every round on the road and traveled to every practice and meet. I'm real proud of the girls. To have all six go under 90 for the first time it means we are headed in the right direction."
That group included O'Donnell, Sammy Minasian (84), Isabella Flack (85), Kate Ponzi (87), Emma Dazzo (88) and Sabrina Accardi (88).
"It's exciting," said O'Donnell, who has played on three of the conference title teams. "We're really happy to be able to do this."
The Knights, who were also 11-0 in league for the seventh straight time, did it with only two of their 13 varsity players having competed in a varsity match prior to this season.
They also did it in some of the coolest weather of the season, with temps in the low 60s most of the round.
"I think the colder weather was good because we want to get used to it before the regionals," O'Donnell said. "It could get colder."
Minasion's clubs were as hot as ever on Tuesday as she registered a career-low score.
The defending MSL junior varsity individual champ (87) was 3 strokes better than her winning JV score last year, also at Palatine Hills.
"This was awesome," Minasian said. "We all worked real hard for it. My drives weren't going as well as I wanted but I made some great recovery shots."
The shot of the day belonged to McDonald, who used a gap wedge to score the first hole-in-one of her career on the 110-yard No. 4.
"Honestly, I thought it was a bad shot," said McDonald, a top rebounder for Barrington's girls basketball team. "When I hit it, I said, 'wow this is not going to be good'. It was really unexpected."
The ball landed just before the front of the green with the pin toward the back. It rolled about 30 feet and landed in the cup for only the second hole-in-one in Fillies' history under coach Jodi Schoeck (28 seasons). The last was by Emily Rebman at Buffalo Grove Golf Course on hole No. 17 in 2010.
"But this is the only one I've seen," Schoeck said with a smile. "I was there from tee-up to in the cup."
Sulkar was finding the cup with regularity in either par of birdie fashion. Her round of 74 gave her the title after tying for 12th (84) as a freshman last year at Fox Run in Elk Grove.
"It's exciting because I was looking forward to this tournament after being a little disappointed with last year," Sulkar said. "I like 18-hole tournaments so I was excited."
Putting prevented Sulkar from an even better score.
"I missed a few," she said. "I three-putted twice (on No. 16 and 17) so that was disappointing."
But the Fillies were appointed a title afterward - MSL West champs. They finished 5 strokes ahead of Fremd.
The Fillies were also 10-1 in MSL West dual play this fall while Fremd was 9-2.
Other top scorers for the MSL West champs were Shivani Majmudar (86), Allie Quinn (91) and McDonald (93).
After Carnes' sizzling third-place score, Buffalo Grove received 85s from Haeri Lee and Jasmine Yi and an 87 from Stacy Mantas. Carnes, an all-area catcher for all-area softball pitcher Julia Carmardo, never played golf before last year.
"I was kind of too timid to play it (golf) as a freshman," she said. "But as a sophomore, I said I might as well give it a try, and it has worked out well. I have been working with a coach (Jon Reese of Pine Meadows) and been feeling better about my game."
Carnes wasn't quite sure why Tuesday brought out her best round of 18.
"I felt really good when I woke up," she said. "Maybe it's the team jacket (BG long sleeve rain apparel) which I wore for the first time."
Carnes covered the course with 13 pars, 4 bogeys and one double.
"We knew she was more than capable of scoring like this," said Bison coach Matt Myers. "Emily is a fantastic athlete. She is really starting to put things together."
Fremd coach Christine Vlaming said her team is capable of better. The Vikes' team score was identical to their score at the Rockford Invite earlier this season.
The Vikes were led by Hur (79), Haezi Jung (81), Annmarie O'Sullivan (91) and Annie Gao (98).
"It's very exciting to be the champs of this league," Hamaan said. "It's a real honor because of all the tough teams. The girls golf in the MSL is definitely tops in the state. There were great teams out there today.
"We are starting to gain some confidence. It will be a lot of fun the next three weeks. But for now, we just want to celebrate this fantastic accomplishment."
Other notable individual accomplishments on Tuesday were an 84 by Conant's Megan Nagorzanski (seventh place), 85 by Hersey's Sophia Cacioppo (tie for ninth), 86 by Schaumburg's Trinity Corwin (tie for 13th), 87 by Hersey's Megan Kopeny (tie for 15th) and 80 by Hersey's Lexi Heidkamp (20th) to complete the top 20 individuals.
